Sa Pobla is a small inland area, located in the northern part of the island of Mallorca. Set in the fertile reclaimed marshland, known as the “Land of a thousand windmills”, this country town is the centre of the farming community and the ‘vegetable basket’ of the island. It has a few shops, a bustling produce market and a little museum of toys and games and contemporary art. In August the village hosts an excellent jazz festival.

Sa Pobla makes an ideal base for your holiday on the island, not least for the range of attractions that are offered here and of course, further a field. For those that are holidaying with a family and small children, the beautiful beaches of Can Picafort and Alcudia are both less than 10 km away, whilst the tranquil nature reserve ‘S’Albufera de Mallorca, one of the most important ecological parks in the Balearic Islands can be found almost adjacent to the town. Internationally protected, it draws in hikers and walkers in their droves and is a mecca for bird watchers with more than 200 species of waterfowl and 30 varieties of fish. Just don’t forget your binoculars and camera.
Continuing on the holistic theme of attractions, you might be interested to know that the region around Sa Pobla. A stroll through its streets leads to the seventeenth-century parish church. The old quarter offers several visits of interest, including modernist buildings and especially the ethnology and contemporary art museums. On the village outskirts is the oratory of Santa Margalida de Crestatx, the island´s oldest, documentation of which dates back to the thirteenth century. A visit to the surrounding area also includes the nine crosses belonging to the municipality, including the cross of Martí Seguí.

Above all attraction, Autumn Fair is one of Mallorca’s biggest. Thousands of people flock the streets of this town during the last weekend of November, and the fair offers the typical markets of local produce and handicrafts. In addition, there are demonstrations by master craftsmen, and of marshal arts by local children. Plenty of concerts are programmed with modern rock bands complementing the traditional music of the xeremier. It is also the home of one of Majorca’s most unusual festivals, the Revelta de Sant Antoni. For two days each January pets are led through the town to be blessed outside the church, dancers drive out the devil for the coming year, and everyone eats pastries filled with spicy spinach and marsh eels.
It is fair to say that Sa Pobla is a captivating place, one in which you are sure to enjoy a relaxing but fulfilling experience whilst here in Mallorca. So it is obvious that there is no better way you can choose to spend your weekend than being at Sa Pobla!
