Sa Coma is a modern purpose built resort that is popular with British tourists, most opting for self-catering accommodation. The resort establishments cater particularly well for children, who make the most of the wide sandy beach with its broad shallow shelf of clear, blue water. The beach has European Blue Flag status for cleanliness, water quality and safety. There is a fairly wide range of water sporting opportunities including windsurfing and waterskiing. Pedalos are available for hire and are very popular with youngsters. A palm lined promenade runs along the length of the beach to S’llot, once an old fishing village, which retains a more traditional atmosphere. The beach boulevard of Sa Coma is an excellent way to walk around the resort on foot. The walking path goes throughout the resort and continues to the hiking area of Punta de n’Amer from the northern side of the resort. This hiking area connects Sa Coma to the resort of Cala Millor . If you don’t feel like walking, there are also many bus stops and mini train stops along the main streets of the resort.
On the outskirts of Sa Coma there is the Auto Safari Zoo. It is possible to drive around the four kilometer circuit oneself. A better and possibly cheaper option is to take the zoo’s mini train as the monkeys are very destructive. As well as monkeys there are giraffes, zebras, elephants and large cats. Those who enjoy horse riding can hire horses and ponies from Rancho Sa Coma. This is a popular pursuit so booking is essential to avoid disappointment. Not far from Sa Coma are Drach’s Caves which are a major tourist attraction. The many caverns have a fantastic array of stalactites and stalagmites all dramatically illuminated. Concerts are often held in the largest cavern, which holds the Martel Lake, where the acoustics are excellent and the lighting effects are spectacular.
Mini-Golfers will be in 7th heaven with the facilities offered by The Golf Paradis complex. Here there are three 18-hole mini-golf courses set within beautifully landscaped gardens. The cost to play a round of golf is quite reasonable and it’s easy to spend quite a few hours there. Apart from golf, there are several opportunities for tennis and squash courts, bowling, go-carting, and bicycling facilities.
Sa Coma offers a varied selection of good quality restaurants for holidaying visitors to enjoy, and just across the foot bridge on the S’Illot seafront even more options are available. Hearty British food is the popular staple served at JJs. BiBaBo café and music bar on the S’Illot front mixes the best of British with some Spanish dishes for families wanting the best of both worlds. The top restaurant in town for Spanish and Mallorquin cuisine is Lago, but this is expensive. A good alternative is the tapas bar next door, or Es Cuerot, which has excellent Mallorquin food and a cellar or terrace venue to choose from. The ‘frito mallorquin’, lamb and vegetable stir-fry, is a speciality here.
In all fairness to the local council, considerable efforts have clearly been made to maintain “green zones” and extend protection to areas of special environmental. Don’t miss the chance to enjoy in this family oriented resort.
