Porto Cristo is really a place to come for a day trip and attracts hundreds of thousands of holiday makers each year thanks to its vast – spectacular underground caves.
The town was first established as the medieval fishing port of Manacor, it then became the islands first tourist spot due to its natural calm harbour. Since the town’s peak in the 1970′s the shine has now faded and most people visit the resort on a day trip basis.
The tourist hot spots in the town are based in the Passeig de la Sirena and harbour where there is a small crowded beach. Next to the beach there are a handful of small caves which were in habited during the Talayotic period and were later used by fishermen as a shelter.
It is impossible to visit Porto Cristo without visiting one of the many underground caves. The most famous of which are the Coves del Drac which are a 15 minute walk from the town centre. Less famous but still equally as important to the Coves del Drac are the Coves dels Hams.
Both cave complexes offer you the chance to walk around what can simply be described as magnificent underground amphitheatres and highly worth the visit.
