Palma Nova is situated on the south west coast of Mallorca, and it’s nearest neighbour is Magaluf. These two are the largest resort developments of the municipal district of Calvia approximately 10 miles to the west of Palma.

Although there is technically a dividing point between Palma Nova and Magaluf, the two resorts have over the years merged more into one particularly in the summer months when many families and 18-30’s couples and singles are attracted to the resorts. Of the two areas, Palma Nova is probably slightly quieter than Magaluf, and so is perhaps a little better suited to families. From October to around March/April time, the pace of the region changes, and more middle aged couples are likely to visit the area.

Palma Nova was one of the earliest purpose built holiday resorts on the island. It still has it’s original fishing harbour, but there are many more yachts now than fishing boats moored there. There are sandy beaches where you can relax and enjoy the sunshine, although the resort is more popular with people who are looking for an active holiday as there is a lot available in terms of watersports, as well as boats with glass bottoms which you can take trips on to see the wonderful array of marine life, and many shops, bars and restaurants to visit from traditional cafés and restaurants along the seafront to the now almost obligatory fast food places such as McDonalds.

Travelling from Palma Nova to Palma for shopping trips or to visit the various attractions there is easy, as there are buses that do the journey every 35-40 minutes or so on most days, although these busses can become rather crowded so it’s worth being careful to keep your valuables well tucked away in case of pickpockets.

Palma Nova doesn’t have any nightclubs of it’s own, but being within walking distance of Magaluf where you will find some of the best nightlife in Europe, this isn’t really an issue, and it does have some bars which stay open late and have DJ’s to provide entertainment into the early hours of the morning.

For those who fancy a bit of hiking, Castell d’Alaro the most popular hiking trail within Mallorca, is close by. The trail runs from the town of Alaro up to the ruin of a castle and hilltop chapel dating back to the 15th Century where you will experience stunning views out across the seas, and also over the plains as far as Palma. There is also a restaurant and bar at the top too where you can enjoy some refreshment before you head home.
